Eat Like NBA Star Tim Duncan

Eat Like NBA Star Tim Duncan

NBA and San Antonio Spurs star Tim Duncan grew up on the island of St. Virgin Islands but it wasn’t until later in life that his basketball prowess developed. Duncan was a swimmer first. Richie Harvey, a childhood neighbor and manager of Harvey’s Restaurant in Christiansted shares that because of his water roots, Duncan enjoyed fish.

Harvey’s Restaurant has newspaper articles and photos of Tim Duncan hanging on the walls inside as well as murals of the Virgin Islands star painted outside. It is for good reason, as Tim Duncan is a household name for even the most casual of sports fans.

Duncan was the first overall pick in the 1997 NBA Draft, won the league’s Rookie of the Year award in 1998, and has four NBA championships. Duncan was also named NBA MVP in 2002 and 2003. This weekend the Spurs, who have clinched the top overall seed for this year’s NBA playoffs, will begin their quest for another NBA championship

On St. Croix, fish is often paired with funji, a polenta-like dish that is cornmeal and okra mixed together. The consistency helps pick fish right off the bone during a meal. Funji is a staple on the menu at Harvey’s restaurant, and even though it was not necessarily one of Duncan’s favorites, Mrs. Harvey refers to him as the “Fish and Funji Boy.”

Eating St. Croix

The email popped up on my screen when I least expected it: “Would you like to explore and write about the inaugural Dine VI Restaurant Week celebrating the local food of St. Croix, US Virgin Islands?” Winter was fast approaching and I suddenly felt ravenous for island food. So my reply was concise: “Hells Yes!

St. Croix, US Virgin Islands. The name alone evokes idyllic images of pristine beaches, swaying palms, cold cocktails with fancy umbrellas. But there is so much more to this triplet sister in the family of paradise islands that form the US Virgin Islands. It’s not just the turquoise blue of the Caribbean in front of stunning hotels it’s the people – Crucians – who hold their society dear and work hard to at once both preserve and advance their uniqueness. And a proud part of what makes this place special? The food.

Danish archituecture prevails in Christiansted

Not long after checking into the iconic Buccaneer Resort I headed into St. Croix’s main event: Christiansted. Here the Caribbean laps against a quay at water’s edge beside the yellow glow of the town’s namesake fort. Old cobblestone streets lead to many small eateries beneath colored archways of stone and coral dating back to 19th century Danish colonialists. Wafting aromas of spice and curry pulled at me as I searched for pastel paintings of NBA star Tim Duncan on an outside wall. “Just ask anyone about the place with the basketball player,” I was told. And it’s true everyone knows Harvey’s.

At Harvey’s Restaurant the mismatched tablecloths and potpourri of pictures are unapologetically authentic. Equally local is the outstanding food, such as Stew Goat in coconut-curry broth, Pot Fish swimming in an earthy sour gravy, or the favored Old Wife – a fish stew replete with bones, sandpaper skin and remarkable flavor. Sides of “provisions” including fungi – a cornmeal and okra mash – complete every plate. And for the fruity burn of scotch bonnet sauce, Mrs. Harvey will guide you to its ethereal meaning.

The magnificent Mrs Harvey

It doesn’t take long before you sense an energy – electric in the air – that is spinning around the food of St. Croix. It’s a culinary renaissance that’s all about local cuisine. And Dine VI Restaurant Week is leading it, encompassing more than thirty dining options highlighting the best of street food, forever-old local cuisine and high-end “New Crucian” cooking. This gustatory explosion has already attracted the attention of the James Beard Foundation and chefs throughout the Americas. Now everybody wants to be part of what’s cooking in St. Croix.

Even the food trucks are pulling in, and at the first-ever Frederiksted Food Truck Festival more than a dozen lined the main drag of St. Croix’s second city between the colonial architecture and a grassy park slipping into the sea. From homemade mace and nutmeg ice cream to local fried fish, jerk chicken, goat roti and latino specialties, the food at this first-time festival surpassed all expectations. Local island musicians like Pressure raised the street party of more than a thousand people to a fever pitch as a common, excited whisper swept through the crowd: “Just wait until next year when this will be REALLY big.”

Tim Duncan Has a Car Story for You

The future Hall of Famer hangs with his buddy Jason Pena at their joint venture, BlackJack Speed Shop.

I n his 19 years playing basketball for the San Antonio Spurs, Tim Duncan quietly became one of the greatest basketball players of all time. Along the way he also quietly became a car guy, and today he owns a couple of speed shops in San Antonio. We sat down with him and one of his partners to talk cars, sports, and the need for speed.

Jason Pena: San Antonio is a car city it’s had that car culture for a long time. Under the lights! Alamo Dragway! [Pena is referring to the seventies-era drag strip, which was razed in 2009.]

Tim Duncan: I don’t know about that. [Laughs.] That’s before my time.

JP: I don’t think the car culture has changed much. The need for speed has always been here. Hot rods, loud music, and tire smoke—it’s still the same.

TD: The ultimate goal is speed. And looking good doing it.

JP: Looking good doing it: that’s important.

TD: I started late in life being a car guy. I started with the customization part of it, got into old cars, then just being around a bunch with these old guys, doing my research, learning what I can. I love cars. You can display them, drive them, customize them, change them. Do something, see something, put your own spin on it. It’s all those things.

JP: For most people, it’s an extension of their personality. You might want green wheels, I might want red wheels. Everyone is their own artist when it comes to their car or truck.

TD: Everybody wants to be able to look good. You might not want to go fast, might just want to look good, might want to go park somewhere and have people admire your car. Or sneak up on people: they’re thinking, “There’s nothing in that car,” and you blow them away.

JP: I like that, the whole sleeper mentality.

TD: Car culture and sports culture aren’t that different. It’s just a different subject, is all it is. It’s the same as when you talk about what you do on the basketball court or in the dugout or wherever. That’s what you’re involved with, what you have in common. Car culture is the same thing.

Basketball's Tim Duncan Suing Terroir Founder Charles Banks

Basketball star Tim Duncan wants out of the wine business. The 15-time NBA All-Star is suing Charles Banks, the founder and managing partner of Terroir Capital, which owns or manages 16 different wineries in California, Oregon, New Zealand, South Africa and Burgundy, over Duncan's investments in Terroir's winery and hotel projects, as well as a sports merchandising company. The San Antonio Spur claims Banks lost $20 million of his money.

Banks denies the allegations and says that Duncan is using the lawsuit as leverage to cash out early on limited partnership investments with fixed time periods. "It's frustrating because this is a business discussion, not a legal discussion," Banks told Wine Spectator. "They're suing to push me to buy him out."

Duncan, 38, has already established himself as a legend on the basketball court. Now in his 18th season with the San Antonio Spurs, the 6'11" power forward has helped win five NBA championships. Off the court, he's known as an intelligent, reserved man who has built an impressive charitable foundation.

Banks had a basketball career too—as a backup at the University of Georgia—but now he's an emerging star in the wine business. From 1992 to 2006, he worked as a financial advisor for pro athletes at CSI Capital Management. Wine was a hobby, but in 2000 he invested in a new Santa Barbara winery called Jonata. In 2006, he and real-estate developer Stan Kroenke bought Napa Valley's Screaming Eagle.

After Banks left both of those wineries, he founded Terroir Capital, inviting a select group to invest in building a winery company from scratch. In just four years, he's assembled a portfolio of brands that produce 500,000 cases annually and range from legendary Napa winery Mayacamas to Santa Barbara pioneer Qupé to Oregon's Evening Land, as well as smaller stakes in hotels and restaurants.

Duncan met Banks in 1998, during his rookie season, and retained Banks and CSI as financial advisors. After Banks left CSI, he offered Duncan a stake in several investments he was putting together, including a sports merchandising company called Gameday Entertainment that Banks is chairman of and two funds at Terroir. According to Banks, Duncan is a significant investor in Terroir's hotel fund and a small investor in the winery fund.

Duncan now claims Banks abused his trust. “Over the course of 17 years, I invested in a series of opportunities presented by Charles Banks, on his assurance that we were working together for my family’s long-term financial security,” Duncan said in a statement. “Banks exploited my good intentions and our relationship for his personal gain and my substantial loss.” He accuses Banks of breach of fiduciary duty and is seeking at least $1 million in damages.

In the lawsuit, filed Jan. 29 in a San Antonio court, Duncan says Banks persuaded him to make a $7.5 million loan to Gameday in 2012, which would be repaid over 5 years at 12 percent interest. The complaint alleges Gameday failed to make all the payments. Duncan also claims Banks collected a 20 percent fee that he never agreed to.

"It's completely false," responds Banks. "He has been paid. It's been a good investment for him. He's made over $2 million since October 2012." As for his fees, "Of course there are fees. I'm in the private equity business."

Duncan's complaint goes on to allege that, "Banks also encouraged, promoted, hustled and advised Duncan to invest in several wineries and investment funds that he controls. Banks has used these wineries and funds to secure substantial income for himself, but they have yet to return much, if anything, to Duncan."

Banks finds the complaint surprising. Terroir made its first purchase in May 2011. "The fund's investment period is five years. We expect to be paying a dividend later this year," he said.

He argues that Duncan agreed to certain minimum investment periods but is now trying to cash out early. "I knew that Tim was unhappy because he wanted to get out of some of his investments after his divorce," he said. "But we've got some terrific investments and I'm not going to let Tim Duncan or anyone else bully me into changing the fund and possibly hurting other investors."

A court date for the suit has not yet been set.

Update: Charles Banks never completed a deal for ownership in Evening Land Vineyards, he subsequently confirmed to Wine Spectator.

How much should Ingram eat?

Brian St. Pierre, director of performance nutrition at Precision Nutrition, recommended that Ingram ingest eight palm-sized portions of protein per day, six to eight fist-sized portions of vegetables per day, 15-20 handfuls of carbs per day and 10-12 thumb-sized portions of fat per day. Graeme Close, a professor of human physiology and sports nutrition at Liverpool John Moores University, suggests a daily intake of 215 grams of protein. "That's right around seven large chicken breasts." Every. Day.

"Usually ectomorph's have long, thin limbs with stringy muscles and the shoulders tend to be thin with little width," McCaw says. "Ectomorphs find it hard to gain weight and have a fast metabolism. These guys can eat like a house and still not put on weight."

It can be even harder for young players who are still growing vertically to pack on pounds -- and bulking up such a player presents a greater risk, says Grover, who notes that for young athletes whose growth plates haven't yet closed, gaining too much weight too quickly can increase risk of injury. "There's a lot of added pressure on your knees, on your hips, all that other stuff," Grover says, "because you're not accustomed to playing with all that weight."

Then there's age. Ingram will turn 19 on Sept. 2 and was the second-youngest player taken in the first round this summer behind Croatian 7-footer Dragan Bender. As Ingram ages, experts say, his metabolism will slow, and it'll be easier to gain weight.

"He's 18. You're not drafting him for one season. This is for the long haul," says Brett Singer, a registered and licensed dietician at the Memorial Hermann Ironman Sports Medicine Institute in Houston. "If his frame isn't perfect in the first year, that's OK. There are other things that he's got to work on other than just gaining weight."

David Thorpe, executive director of the Pro Training Center in Clearwater, Florida, and an NBA writer for ESPN.com, says he actually rejects altogether the notion that Ingram must gain weight to play in the NBA. "I firmly believe he has to get stronger, [but] athletes get stronger. So do non-athletes," says Thorpe, who has worked in player development since 1993 with more than 70 NBA and hundreds of European basketball players. "This is a game of speed and skill. The list of skinny guys that lasted a long time is very, very long."

"Adding weight presents way more risk than reward. It's not going to make him jump higher, run faster or quicker. It might help him hold his position in the post, but did the Lakers draft him to put him in the post? If the biggest problem Brandon Ingram has in the next five years is that he can't hold his position in the post, I think the Lakers will be very happy."

Ingram's AAU coach and former NBA All-Star Jerry Stackhouse offers a similar view. "The skill set is there and you don't want to take away from [Ingram's] skill set by making him uncomfortable with bulkiness," he says. Some of the finishes that he has, [he] can contort his body and he's able to do that because he's long and he's skinny. If he was 20 pounds, 30 pounds heavier, would he be able to do that? I don't know."

IN 1989, WHEN Grover first worked with Michael Jordan, their goal was simple: five pounds a year. "We put on five pounds a year until he told me, 'This is where I feel comfortable at,' and then from there, we stopped," Grover says. For the 6-foot-6 Jordan, who was listed at 195 pounds when drafted in 1984, that ideal range eventually fell between 213 and 218 pounds.

Chick-Fil-A — Tim Duncan, Power Forward

@SASUpdates/@OutHereFlourishing

Despite serving fantastic fried chicken, Chick-Fil-A is a bit boring, yet it is known for being fundamentally sound. The same can be said for long time San Antonio Spurs star Tim Duncan.

Known as "The Big Fundamental," Tim Duncan was one of the most conservative players on and off the court. Duncan was never in headlines with bad publicity, or spoke out of line when it came to interviews — but perhaps could have done more to improve his brand as a player.

Chick-Fil-A finds itself in the same quandary. Operating under a very conservative business model, if Chick-Fil-A functioned on the 7-day week, perhaps it could shed that conservative reputation and stand out in the crowd a bit more.

Notable accolades: 5x NBA Champion, 3x NBA Finals MVP, 2x Regular Season MVP

Tim Duncan decides to exercise player option for 2016-17

SAN ANTONIO &ndash Tim Duncan has decided to exercise the $5.6 million player option on his 2016-17 contract, a league source confirmed to the Express-News, but the future Hall of Famer is said to be still undecided as to whether he will return for his 20th season with the Spurs.

A five-time NBA champion and the cornerstone of what is widely regarded as one of the top franchises in professional sports, Duncan is coming off a season in which he produced just 8.6 points and 7.3 rebounds, well below his career averages of 19 points and 10.8 rebounds.

Still, he upheld his reputation as one of the league's top rim protectors for a team that won a franchise-record 67 wins.

SAN ANTONIO (AP) — San Antonio Spurs star Tim Duncan is finally calling it a career.

Duncan announced his retirement on Monday after 19 seasons, five championships, two MVP awards and 15 All-Star appearances. It marks the end of an era for the Spurs and the NBA.

Duncan was the No. 1 overall pick out of Wake Forest in 1997 and teamed with Gregg Popovich, Tony Parker and Manu Ginobili to make the Spurs the most enduring success story in modern American sports. His reserved demeanor and game built on fundamentals more than athleticism served as the backbone for the franchise’s unparalleled run.

Duncan was a three-time NBA Finals MVP and was named to the All-NBA First Team 10 times in his career. He is fifth on the NBA’s career list in blocks, sixth in rebounds and 14th in scoring.

Tim Duncan Is Joining The Marvel Universe On An Upcoming Cover Of ‘The Punisher’

When you’re one of the biggest NBA stars in history – a 5-time NBA Champion, 3-time Finals MVP, 2-time league MVP and 14-time All-Star, among other accolades – if you want to be on the cover of a comic book, you get to be on the cover of a comic book. San Antonio Spurs star Tim Duncan’s love of Marvel’s Punisher has never been much of a secret, as the typically-quiet and reserved future Hall-of-Famer wears a white skull knee brace, among other comic-themed designs, to tell the league not to screw with his old bones, and the brooding loner has been Duncan’s Halloween costume of choice for at least a few years.

But now his fanfare is being immortalized on the cover of an upcoming issue, as Duncan will hand the keys to a new ride over to Frank Castle himself. The cover of the issue, which hits stands on October 25, was drawn by San Antonio native Michael Choi, who told NBA.com that he’s a “bigger basketball nerd than comic book nerd,” and naturally he’s a huge fan of Duncan.

“None of this would have happened if Tim wasn’t a huge Marvel fan and The Punisher specifically. I really love that he’s proud of the fact that he’s a big comic book fan, and I always got a kick out of reading about him dressing up as The Punisher for Halloween, and incorporating the Punisher’s logo on his knee brace. Everyone who knows about Tim Duncan beyond what he does on the court knows that about him, and as a comic book guy myself, I think that’s awesome.” (Via NBA.com)

Basically, Duncan and the guys at his BlackJack Speed Shop – his three loves are basketball, comic books and cars, in no specific order – asked Marvel if they could design a new car for the Punisher, and of course Marvel said yes, because it’s Tim-f*cking-Duncan. Then Duncan took it a step further and decided that the team at BlackJack would actually build the car that they designed and auction it off for charity.

If the day ever comes that someone reveals something unbelievably terrible about Duncan, I will eat a Spurs jersey. Okay, maybe not an actual Spurs jersey, because that’s a lot of mesh to pass, but I will at least eat a great steak and ruin it by pouring steak sauce on it.
